About this title

Alex is a chemistry student at Hudson Heights University in the Bronx — "the nicest guy I've ever met," Veronica used to say. Then the city took her. At her funeral, something in Alex cracks open: visions of his own death, arriving in flashes of red, seconds before they happen. A wrong step, a wrong word, a wrong alley — he watches himself die, then wakes at the moment of choice. Someone has to answer for Veronica. The trail leads through hospital corridors and police cordons, pawnshops and rooftops, into the orbit of a crew who hunt in leather and work the night: Cain, Lilith, Lash, and Sundance. They know things about the city's dead that no one alive should. And Alex — grieving, furious, and impossible to kill twice — is done being the nicest guy anyone ever met.
